In a recent paper published by Cornell University, cryptography and security researches have proposed an exciting, albiet terrifying method for collecting smartphone user data and intel. Titled PlaceRaider, a mobile malware program is proposed as a method for visual data (via camera) collection hidden within accessible photo sharing applications. PlaceRaider is activated by a mobile devices gyroscope and accelerometer snapping photos and gathering visual intel discreetly and without user knowledge.
The idea that such a program could exist and be deployed across thousands if not MILLIONS of mobile downloads leaves me somewhat... paranoid. @_@
